Express Your Artistic Voice: Join the Banned Books Week Art Contest!
For Middle and High School students! Entries will be displayed at Wicomico Public Library throughout Banned Books Week, and then during a Banned Books Week event at Salisbury University on October 6th.
Are you a budding author with a love of words or do you have an artistic talent? We have an exciting opportunity for you! The upcoming Banned Books Week Art Contest is all about expressing your thoughts on the importance of the Freedom to Read through your individual artistic perspective. Whether you enjoy writing, film creation, or digital design, this competition is your chance to show off your talents and win prizes.
Categories and Prizes:
Choose your preferred medium:
- Poster Art (Digital/Traditional): Let your imagination run wild and create a poster (digitally or physically) that captures the essence of literary freedom.
- Video: Are you a storyteller at heart? Craft a video in under one minute that conveys the significance of having the freedom to explore diverse literary worlds.
- Written Word: If writing comes naturally to you, express your ideas in a 500-word essay. Please explain why you believe the freedom to read is important.
Every participant stands a chance to win a $50 gift card from either Walmart or Target. Imagine what you could do with that prize money!
Submission Guidelines:
Be sure to bear the following rules in mind before you begin your creative process:
- Only one submission per contestant is allowed.
- The contest is for Middle and Highschool students
- Submit your masterpiece by September 22, 2023. You can drop it off in person at any Wicomico Public Library location or send it via email to marketing@wicomico.org.
- All submitted multi-media art becomes the property of Wicomico Public Library.

This contest offers you the chance to share your opinions on the value of being free to read from a variety of viewpoints in addition to showing your artistic talent. Your art has the power to make a statement and contribute to a larger conversation.
Get Ready for the Big Reveal:
After September 22, all artwork will be displayed at the Paul S. Sarbanes Branch for the community to vote on the creativity and effectiveness in illustrating the theme. Then mark your calendars for October 2, 2023! That's when the winners will be announced. Your hard work and creativity could earn you well-deserved recognition.
